Fit for Purpose
Biocontainment Infrastructure Services (BIS) specialises in designing and developing rapid deployment modular containerised laboratories (MCLs) for high-profile clients across South Africa, Africa, and other countries. Our MCLs are tailored to overcome challenges in regions with limited infrastructure, offering fast, cost-effective laboratory solutions for mining, governments, aid organisations, and research providers.
With a proven track record over numerous years, BIS has successfully deployed MCLs in countries such as Botswana, Zambia, Haiti, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Rwanda supporting critical healthcare, research operations, and metalurgic testing.

Changing the World
One Container at a Time
Biocontainment Infrastructure Services (BIS) is owned and managed by Ingrid Terlouw, a South African pathology sector leader with over 30 years of experience. Since the early 1990s, she has developed and implemented over 35 clinical diagnostic laboratories across South Africa, including her first International project at Botswana Private Hospital.
Ingrid was pivotal in launching the first containerised labs in South Africa’s rural areas as part of the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). This groundbreaking success prompted BIS to expand internationally, delivering the first Containerised TB Laboratory (CTL) to the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ). This success motivated BIS to expand into other industries, leading to a collaboration with Fabrinox to specifically target the mining sector.

Containerised TB Laboratories
With a 12-week manufacturing time and quick one-week on-site deployment, CTLs offer durability and mobility, supporting TB research and diagnostics in Africa and developing countries. These labs enhance epidemiological surveillance, expand diagnostic capacity, and decentralise TB testing in underdeveloped regions. Both MCL and CTL designs offer safe, efficient, and scalable platforms for large-scale testing and new diagnostic technologies in challenging environments.
